Why the Cosmetic Acupuncture is one of the best cosmetic therapies you should have

By Peng Chen

Same to acupuncture for weight loss, cosmetic  acupuncture or so called beauty acupuncture is a modern acupuncture treatment. Some articles claimed that such therapy includes facial acupuncture has been used nearly one thousand years before in ancient China, well, as far as I know, that is not true. In ancient China, all the Chinese doctors were men and they were not allowed to have too much physical contact with their female patients due to the feudal ideas on man and woman at that time, not to mention inserting needles into a female’s face. Thus, the cosmetic acupuncture is actually a recently invented beauty therapy that base on TCM acupuncture theory and method.

Studies published in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture in 1996 showed that of 300 people who received Facial Acupuncture, 90% demonstrated marked results after only their first treatment. The Irish Times recently acclaimed this treatment as:  “…a viable alternative to cosmetic surgery and the effects can run much deeper than simply improving appearances.”

According to TCM theory, the health of one’s skin relates to three major facts: external environment, internal organs and the condition of vital energy (Qi) and blood. It’s very easy to understand that the environment affects the skin health such like dryness, strong sunshine and wind could all cause skin problems. But, have you ever thought about why people have skin problems or diseases even when they live in a relatively friendly environment? Why wrinkles show up when people age? Or, sometime why people at the same age show significant difference in their skin condition and even appearance?

TCM theory gave all the questions above proper answers. In Chinese medicine theory, the skin acts as a mirror of one’s internal health. Sufficient vital energy (Qi) and blood supplement to the skin pattern well insures the skin maintaining its health. Furthermore, two internal organs which are lung and spleen (digestion system) together play a major role of the skin health. Thus, during aging process, one’s skin condition keeps getting worse due to the decrease of blood and Qi circulation. Someone who successfully maintains his/her internal organs’ health would normally have a better skin condition than who is at similar age but experiencing digestion issues or respiratory problems.

Acupuncture is a treatment that insert special needles into certain Acu-points to impact and to regulate Qi and blood flow within the meridians in the positive way for healing purposes such like promoting Qi&blood circulation or improving internal organ’s function.  In another word, acupuncture stimulates the body’s ability to heal itself.

Cosmetic acupuncture focuses on improving the regeneration of the skin. And meantime time, it also promotes the internal organs’ function and help people to maintain their general wellbeing. Compare to Botox, cosmetic acupuncture supports all the functions of the skin, while Botox just affects the subcutaneous facial muscles and does not contribute to one’s health. Some studies even suggested that on a long-term basis, Botox-like procedures could even deteriorate the volume of the facial muscles as well as minimize the blood supply and oxygenation to the skin.

Same as the other Traditional Chinese acupuncture treatments, in our clinic, for each new client, there is always an initial consultation before her/his first cosmetic acupuncture treatment. Through the consultation, the practitioner uses traditional consultation methods to collect information of client’s individual health condition. And according to the conclusion of consultation, a tailor-made treatment plan includes acupuncture point selection and the number and frequency of the sessions of the entire course. In general, a course of six to twelve treatments shall be recommended for substantial long-term results which include wrinkle reduction, face lifting, facial skin firming and general health improvement. As we always said: ‘Cosmetic acupuncture at ©Urbanhealthandwellbeing is not just a temporary fix.’
